Punishment for cheating
Before he could try to escape, the villagers caught him and not only beat him up but also took away his donkey.
In a small village, there lived a washerman who would load clothes from the city onto a donkey and bring them back to the village to wash. After washing, he would load them back onto the donkey and return to the city. This was his only source of income, and he earned enough to live comfortably. However, he was extremely miserly. While he would enjoy delicious food in the city, he would keep his donkey hungry and would not spend a single penny on feeding or watering it.
As time passed, the poor donkey became so weak from hunger that its bones were clearly visible. Yet the cruel washerman showed no mercy to the innocent animal. One day, while the washerman was taking the clothes to the city on the donkey, the animal, weak and exhausted, suddenly stumbled and fell. As a result, all the clothes were ruined and fell into the dirt. The washerman was furious, but seeing the condition of the donkey, he refrained from hitting it. Instead, he began to think seriously about a solution—one that would allow him to avoid spending money and still provide food for the donkey.
Lost in thought, the washerman, with the donkey, was on his way back to the village when he passed through a forest and found a lion's skin. The moment he saw the skin, an idea struck him. He quickly picked it up and put it on the donkey.
The next day, the washerman took the donkey, now disguised in the lion's skin, to a nearby field where people were working. When the people saw what they thought was a lion entering the field, they were so terrified that they immediately ran away, leaving the field empty. The donkey, now free from disturbance, grazed on the grass. The washerman repeated this trick every day. He would take the donkey into different fields, and when people saw the "lion," they would flee in fear, allowing the donkey to eat the grass without anyone stopping it.
In a few days, the donkey's health improved, and the washerman was extremely pleased that he had managed to feed the donkey without spending any money. He was unaware that lies don’t last forever.
One day, as usual, the washerman took the donkey to the fields. Upon seeing the "lion," the workers ran away in fear. However, among them was a wise man. At first, he too ran in terror, but when he saw the "lion" grazing on the grass, he quickly understood the trick. He knew that lions do not graze on grass. Upon looking carefully, he noticed the washerman hiding behind a tree. The entire truth became clear to him. The wise man signaled to the workers, who then gathered around and understood the situation.
Together, they decided to teach the washerman a lesson. Quietly, they approached and stood right behind him. When the washerman turned around and saw the angry crowd, he realized he was in trouble. Before he could run, the villagers caught him, not only giving him a good beating but also taking the donkey from him.
From that day onward, the washerman was forced to carry the goods on his shoulders, bringing them to and from the city. Meanwhile, the new owner of the donkey loved it dearly and made sure to feed it fresh grass from his own fields.
